On Social Norms

This is more of a rant, but here it goes.

Last week I had an interaction in the restroom that made me wonder: Why is it okay to fart in there but not in the office? Obviously we do generate gasses that have to be let out. But why specifically in the restroom? I had to think of the scene from Poker Face where a girl farts in the WC and goes like “that’s what you do here” to Charlie when she looked at her. Sure, it’s disgusting when someone farts, but why is it okay to do that in the WC? Both the office and the WC are closed rooms. Then why not just step outside to fart?

Another example would be a concert visit I was planning to do last Friday that I missed it due to getting swamped. Why is there a dress code (it was a classical music concert) for it? I’m just going to sit there and listen to the performance. Not to mention, it’s fucking cold and I’ve no faith in the A/C keeping the Church (the venue) warm enough to be cozy. While the dress code has the function to separate the plebs from the “elite,” it lacks a palpable and practical function. Oh, look, we’re dressed better than the folks outside, we’re special! But what’s the benefit? I’d rather be warm and cozy.
